War Heroes (Guajiros) is an ongoing photo series born from a personal curiosity that evolved into a deeper connection with my roots. Growing up, my grandmother kept Cuba alive through vivid stories filled with resilience, family, and a country she loved. As I got older, those stories pulled me closer to a side of my family I had only heard about.

Since 2014, I’ve traveled through Cuba, documenting the culture that once felt distant. I became especially drawn to the world of tobacco farming—an industry built on pride, tradition, and hardship. The people who work the land, known as guajiros, are the quiet heroes of this story. This project honors their grit, their dignity, and the generations of knowledge passed down through tough conditions.

This work is still in progress. Each trip deepens my understanding and brings me closer to the soul of a country that shaped my story long before I ever set foot on its soil.
